This is Stephen King, what else can I say about it?Of course the story will be expected to have darker elements than other mainstream writings. It starts of a little slow, but quickly speeds up into a faster paced, attention keeping story. The characters have quickly endeared themselves to me and I became emotional invested in the book. This one is one of my 'forever' books, as I can keep re-reading it and still become involved in Jack's world. I can honestly say that Wolf is my favorite character.
I would NOT hesitate to recommend this book to any fan of an intense, attention- keeping fantasy/ reality fictional story. This was a personal purchase.

The Talisman A Novel Stephen King Peter Straub 9781451697216 Books Reviews
I read The Talisman when I was in high school, and the story still sticks with me today. It's part horror, part fantasy, part adventure. What King and Straub managed to do was weave a wonderful story with intrigue and suspense, regardless of how you want to classify it. In The Talisman, Jack Sawyer must travel between his world and a parallel universe where his mother is the queen all in the hopes of saving his mother, who is dying. The novel has a clear dark edge to it despite the youth of its protagonist. It's not all fun and games for Jack, who has the ability to flip between worlds in this adventure. In the process he befriends Wolf, a werewolf from the alternative universe. Wolf provides some comic relief as well as some scary moments for Jack as he transforms into a werewolf in our world under a full moon.
Trying to stop Jack in his quest is his evil uncle Morgan Sloat and the forces that work for him, who would like to see Jack's mother perish. The novel has a definite epic feel to it. There are a lot of interesting parallels between the worlds like how time and distance are related to each other as well as the contrast between the use of magic and technology. The Talisman is one of the novels that really turned me on to the worlds of fantasy and horror and made me want to write. It's brilliantly crafted and well written. Separately Stephen King and Peter Straub are great writers, but together they work magic.
Carl Alves - author of Two For Eternity.
A little boy of 12 with the world on his shoulders, Jack is special in a way that his new friend Speedy Parker knows. He's able to slip through to another world, a world of magic and monsters. But also a world of enchantment and beauty. Jack visits this world as he makes his way across the entire United States to retrieve a magical artifact called the Talisman.
Our world is seamlessly entwined with this other world called The Territories in a way that master "word-slinger" Stephen King is known for. The characters are robust and become friends of the reader as the journey progresses.
I've listened to the audio disc version 4 times and read the book twice. It's a story that gets in your head, and each pass through you learn something new. A special treat is that like many of King's books, the characters are linked in subtle (and not so subtle) ways to other stories. If you read this, you must also read "Black House" to follow Jack as an adult on another great adventure.
One of my favorite King books. A great collaborating with Peter Straub. I am so happy that during the late 80's early 90's King movie glut that they never got around to trying to make this into a movie. Maybe now with the talent and cgi they could do it. This is so different from anything King wrote before, is why I like it so much.
I am a longtime Stephen King fan and have read at least 30 of his books. This being the first co-written by Peter Straub, I was not sure what to expect.
I have to say that the beginning was a bit too slow and intangible for me and it made no sense how the health of one person could matter so much....but then we slowly find out...and the journey felt like The Stand (good vs bad) mixed up with The Gunslinger (crazy train and crazy creatures). This is meant as a compliment. Really enjoyed the character development, but ending felt a bit predictable at least concptually (there are many diversions along the way). In any event, enjoyed it...well worth sticking with the slow beginning.
I LOVE THIS BOOK! I first read it in high school......(NO I WILL NOT TELL YOU WHAT YEAR). I absolutely fell in love with the writings of Peter Straub after this collaboration with Stephen King. As you know Stephan King is the MASTER of writing fiction and horror and Peter Straub is his "TWINNER". I truly believe this book was written with the both of these two great writers in another realm. It is surreal and will make you think of the slight possibility that there is a good probability that the "Territories" could exist. I truly hope you enjoy this GREAT piece of fiction.
Third time reading and still one of my favorite fantasy novels of all time. Wonderful, high level of diction, but not snooty. It just makes everything come alive so much more.
Both King and Straub write the best villains, and there are several very good bad guys to hate here. There are also several very good guys to like, even love, aside from the main character, Jack Sawyer.
If you haven't read THE TALISMAN in a while, it may be time to read it again. If you've never read it, it's definitely time for you to read it!
As my review title says, this is one of the greatest books ever written. I have 2 favourite books of all time & this is one of them. Unsurprisingly the other is also written by Stephen King, The Stand. My words will never do justice to this book so I won't even try. Just trust that if you ever have doubt in Stephen King's ability to transport you into another world, read this book & you'll never doubt him again. Thank you Mr King, this book helped shape my world.
